Grace Ng, Associate Nursing Director at NYSIM was an invited speaker at the annual NN2RC conference in Louis-ville, KY in March. She presented her talk, titled: Strengthening Programs Through Simulation: Myths and Reality, to approximately 30 respiratory care faculty and program leaders from around the country.
The Hot Topics co-chairs are pleased to announce that Drs. Pamela Jeffries, Daniel Raemer and William Dunn have accepted our invitation to be the 2015 plenary speakers. William Dunn, MD, FCCP, FCCM, is Associate Pro-fessor of Medicine, and a Consultant in the Division of Pulmonary and Criti-cal Care Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Formerly he was the director of the simulation center and has a particular interest in systems integration and patient safety. Daniel Raemer, PhD is a principal faculty member and the Director of Research and Development at the Center for Medical Simulation in Boston and is an Associate Professor of Anesthesia at Mass General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Pamela Jeffries, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, is a Professor in the School of Nursing and the Vice Provost of Digital Initiatives at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Her work has been critical in shaping the use of Simulation in Nursing Education interna-tionally. In addition to their influential work in simulation education all three speakers have served as president’s of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
These Ashuar women were given the opportunity to learn about safe birthing skills from an Organi-zation called Jungle Mamas. During these simula-tions they used Mama Natalie manikins' donated by NYSIM.
Three and a half years since opening, NYSIM is on track to have its 50,000th learner visit in April, 2015. This is a remarkable achieve-ment and shows the effort of our faculty members at CUNY and NYU to incorporate simulation into their curricula, the great effort on part of the NYSIM staff to make the Cen-ter accessible to learners of all levels and disciplines, and the commitment of our two great universities to quality education. Con-gratulations to all!!
In collaboration with MFM faculty and fellows from around the country, NYSIM Simulation and Education Fellow Kristen Uquillas helped facilitate a 4-hour workshop entitled “Practical Obstetric Critical Care: Hand-On Simulation” to fifty participants. The workshop was designed to strengthen participant’s under-standing of sepsis, endocrinologic emergencies, cardiac arrest, and transfusion for coagulopathy during pregnancy through immersive simulations and hands-on skills stations. The course was well received by participants and Kristen hopes to assist with it again as an MFM fellow at the 2016 meeting.
Dr. Paul Kim has accepted a position as the Assistant Medical Director of the New York Simulation Center for the Health Sciences (NYSIM). Over the last three years, Paul has developed and taught simulation based courses at the NYU Medical School including the Special Topics in Medicine for the 3-year Pathway and the Interclerkship Intensive as well as in the Pediatric Residency and in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. He completed his undergraduate studies at Yale University and medical school at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He stayed on at Mount Sinai Hospital for his Pediatric Residency and completed his Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. He is an attending physician in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Congenital Cardiovascular Care Unit at Tisch Hospital and in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Bellevue Hospital. His interests include medical education and safety, and he also co-chairs the Pediatric Medication Safety and Therapeutics Committee at Tisch.
NYSIM would like to welcome Rory Wallace to our team. Rory has accepted the position of administrative assistant and will be supporting the front desk functions of the center. Rory is a professionally trained classical singer whose activities include performing in concerts, recitals, operas and oratorios throughout the country. He is also a church mu-sician at the Middle Collegiate Church in the East Village and a member of the New York City Master Chorale.
Tom Vongbandith, IT Senior Systems Analyst at NYSIM, Grace Ng, Associate Nursing Director at NYSIM and Michael Young, Director of Healthcare Education & Business Development at Level 3 Healthcare presented a workshop, “Become IT Literate: Beyond Cables, Connectors and Couplers.” Over 60 participants attended the 2-hour course which was designed to help educate Simulation Operation Specialists, Clinicians and Educators on how they can use System Diagrams, Use Case methodologies and Root Cause Analysis to better interpret simulation IT system design, perform IT needs assessment, and troubleshoot technical problems from a systems perspective. The course was well received by the participants and we hope to present it again at IMSH 2016.
Grace Ng, Associate Nursing Director at NYSIM, in collaboration with five other faculty from the Center for Medical Simulation in Boston, presented a 90 minute workshop “Improving Debriefing Skills Through Peer Observation and Feedback” to 50 participants. The goal of the workshop was to strengthen the participants’ ability to give and take feedback on their debriefing skills from peers. Via role play exercises, the participants practiced techniques for “Debriefing the Debriefer,” focusing on exploring each other’s underlying mental frames, and reflecting on their own strengths, weaknesses, and comfort zones as debriefers. This workshop was previously presented by Grace and Demian Szyld, Associate medical Director at NYSIM, during IMSH 2013 and 2014.
