Timeline

Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, the City University of New York”s (CUNY) Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) received $20.8 million to create an emergency preparedness training center.

In 2007, the newly appointed Dean and CEO of NYU Langone Medical Center, Dr. Robert I. Grossman, commissioned a committee to address the needs for a simulation facility for the medical center. Dr. Thomas S. Riles chaired the committee, which included faculty members from the NYU School of Medicine, Tisch Hospital administrators and representatives from the NYU Schools of Nursing and Dentistry.

In 2008, a meeting between CUNY and NYU Langone Medical Center representatives lead to the partnership and plans to construct the New York Simulation Center for the Health Sciences (NYSIM).

An agreement was reached to use the $20.8 million from CUNY for construction and equipment of the Center. NYU Langone Medical Center agreed to match the amount in operational costs. Faculties and administrators from both institutions participated in the planning and design of the Center.

In 2010, Construction of the Center in the 3rd floor of Bellevue Hospital commenced.

NYSIM officially opened its doors on September 6, 2011. The opening was 10 years after the event that lead to the initial funding of the center.
